How to Use a Reed Diffuser: Tips From the Founder

I’ve been using our diffusers in my own home for over 20 years, and I still love how effortless they are. Just a few reeds, a little time, and the whole room changes.

Our luxury reed diffusers are beloved for their always-on fragrance and clean, classic design. If you’re new to reed diffusers, setup is simple: remove the closed cap, replace it with the open cap, insert the reeds, and flip them right away to begin diffusing fragrance. From there, where you place your diffuser and how often you flip the reeds will affect how strong the scent feels and how long it lasts.

Below, I’m answering the questions I hear most often so you can get the very best from your Alora diffuser.

Reed Diffuser FAQs

How do reed diffusers work?

Reed diffusers scent the air naturally by drawing fragrance up through porous reeds, which slowly release it into the room over time .No flame or electricity is needed

Flip more reeds for a stronger scent, or just one or two for something more subtle. It’s an easy way to customize the fragrance level in your space.

How do I set up my reed diffuser?

Setting up your diffuser is quick and easy.

Start by removing the closed wooden cap from the glass bottle and replacing it with the open wooden cap, the one with the hole in the center. Then insert the reeds through the cap and into the fragrance.

For best results, flip the reeds right away so both ends are saturated. This helps jumpstart the diffusion process and gets the scent circulating more quickly.

Tip: I like to flip mine over the sink, as the fragrance contains alcohol and can damage certain finishes if it drips on furniture.

Watch the video below to see exactly how I set one up.

Where should I place a reed diffuser?

Reed diffusers work beautifully in entryways, powder rooms, bedrooms, and living spaces, anywhere you’d like a steady, subtle fragrance.

For best results, place your diffuser where air can circulate gently, but keep it away from direct sunlight, heat sources, open windows, and strong vents or drafts. Too much airflow can cause the fragrance to evaporate more quickly.

How often should I flip the reeds?

That depends on how noticeable you’d like the fragrance to be.

For a stronger scent or a larger room, flip all the reeds. For a softer scent or a smaller space, flipping just one or two reeds can give a gentle boost.

Keep in mind that the more often you flip the reeds, the faster the fragrance will evaporate. It’s all about finding the right balance between scent strength and longevity.

How long will my diffuser last?

Our 8 oz diffusers typically last 1 to 3 months, while the 16 oz size usually lasts 3 to 5 months.

How long a diffuser lasts depends on several factors, including room temperature, humidity, airflow, and how often you flip the reeds.

Can I close and reopen a diffuser later?

Yes. Many longtime customers temporarily close their diffusers while traveling or save certain scents for another season.

Just be sure to keep both caps and the original box so storing and reopening it is easy.

Why do some fragrances smell stronger or look darker than others?

Some fragrance notes, like vanilla and cinnamon, are naturally stronger and richer in color, while lighter notes like citrus tend to stay clearer.

Over time, it is also completely normal for diffuser oils to darken slightly, especially those made with natural and essential oils. To help slow this process, keep your diffuser out of direct sunlight and away from heat.

Why can’t I smell my diffuser anymore?

Your nose has likely adjusted. Scent fatigue is real.

Try moving the diffuser to another room, flipping the reeds, or switching between fragrances from time to time to reset your senses.

Do you offer refills?

We don’t. While the fragrance would still diffuse, we don’t recommend pouring new oil into an old bottle, as it can affect the scent experience.

Fresh reeds matter too. Once reeds are fully saturated, they do not perform the same way new ones do. Each diffuser comes in a fresh glass bottle, ready to enjoy from the start.

And once your diffuser is empty, you can always tuck the used reeds into a drawer or under a car seat for a little lingering scent.

What is the shelf life of an unopened diffuser?

For best results, we recommend using your diffuser within three years of purchase.

Are Alora reed diffusers safe to use around pets?

Alora reed diffusers are generally safe to use around pets, especially since there is no open flame or heat source involved.

That said, we always recommend keeping diffusers out of reach to help prevent spills or tipping.

I discovered Bimbi over 25 years ago at the Sanderling Inn Spa on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The scent is fresh, natural, and gentle. It’s the first scent that greets family at home and patients in my office and the only scent that doesn’t trigger my allergies.. Bimbi is the best for anyone with allergies. It’s especially nice in foyers, bathrooms, bedrooms and offices. My daughters and daughter-in-law have carried on the Bimbi tradition. Add to that the efficiency with which the shipments arrive after ordering and the marvelous way they are packaged. Alora Ambiance is an incredible company with a personal touch!

Isola holds a memory for me. My husband and I were in Paris….and invited to the Vuitton Museum where candles were burning and the scent was divine. Isola is the closest I’ve come to it….and I have the old diffuser and a candle as memories.
