How to Use a Reed Diffuser: Tips From the Founder

I’ve been using our diffusers in my own home since we launched Alora in 2000, and I still love how effortless they are. They quietly become part of the room and the way it feels.

If you’ve been considering adding one to your home and want to know how to use a reed diffuser, I’ll walk you through the questions I hear most often. 

How Reed Diffusers Work

Reed diffusers scent the air naturally by drawing alcohol-based fragrance up through capillary action. Alcohol evaporates naturally, so the porous reeds carry scent into the air. No flame or electricity is needed.

Flip more reeds for a stronger scent, or just one or two for a nice boost. It’s an easy way to customize the fragrance level in your space. 

Just keep in mind that the more often you flip the reeds, the faster the fragrance will evaporate. It’s all about finding the right balance between scent strength and longevity.

How to Use Diffuser Reed Sticks

Each Alora diffuser comes with a full set of reed sticks: 11 for the 8 oz size and 13 for the 16 oz. When setting up your diffuser, put all the reeds into the bottle right away, then flip them right away so both ends are saturated. 

How long will my reed diffuser last?

Our 8 oz diffusers typically last 1 to 3 months, while the 16 oz size usually lasts 3 to 5 months.

How long a diffuser lasts can vary depending on temperature, airflow, placement, and how often you flip the reeds. 

How To Set Up a Reed Diffuser

Setting up your diffuser is quick and easy.

Start by removing the closed wooden cap from the glass bottle and replacing it with the open wooden cap, the one with the hole in the center. Then insert the reeds through the cap and into the fragrance.

For best results, flip the reeds right away so both ends are saturated. This helps jumpstart the diffusion process and gets the scent circulating more quickly.

I like to flip mine over the sink because the fragrance contains alcohol, which can damage certain finishes if it drips onto furniture.

The Best Rooms for Reed Diffusers

Reed diffusers work beautifully in entryways, powder rooms, bedrooms, and living spaces, anywhere you’d like a continuous fragrance.

For best results, place your diffuser where air can circulate gently, but keep it away from direct sunlight, heat sources, open windows, and strong vents or drafts. Too much airflow can cause the fragrance to evaporate more quickly.

Can I close and reopen a diffuser later?

Yes. Many longtime customers temporarily close their diffusers while traveling or save certain scents for another season. Just be sure to keep both caps and the original box so storing and reopening it is easy.

Our formulas are vegan, not tested on animals, and free of parabens and phthalates, including DEP. I care just as much about what goes into each bottle as how it makes your home feel.

Do you offer samples?

Yes. I know how personal fragrance is, and I never want you to have to guess. You can order samples of each of our fragrances so you can try a scent in your own home before committing to a full-size diffuser. 

Do you offer refills?

We don’t offer refills. Each Alora diffuser comes complete with a fresh bottle and the appropriate number of natural reeds.

And once your diffuser is empty, I like to tuck the used reeds into a drawer or under a car seat for a little lingering fragrance. 

Do I have to replace the reeds?

No. Our reeds are made to last as long as your diffuser. The 8oz diffuser lasts 1-3 months, and our 16oz diffuser lasts 3-5 months. Replacement reed sticks are available if yours are lost or damaged.

Scent Fatigue Is Real

This is one of the most common things I hear, and it’s rare for the diffuser to have actually stopped working. If you can’t smell your reed diffuser anymore, your nose has likely adjusted to the scent. When you’re around the same scent every day, you may stop noticing it as much, while someone else may walk into the room and smell it right away. 

What I usually suggest is switching to a different Alora fragrance for a while. I know that can be hard when you have a longtime favorite, but changing scents often helps you notice fragrance again. 

Why do some fragrances smell stronger or look darker than others?

Some fragrances naturally feel stronger or softer in a room because of their notes. For example, citrus fragrances tend to feel lighter in a room, while richer notes like vanilla are more noticeable. 

It’s also completely normal for the reeds or fragrance to darken over time. That doesn’t mean anything is wrong with the diffuser.
