There’s a moment every fall when I know it’s time to change the way my house smells. The air turns cooler, I start making something warm to drink, and suddenly I want every room to feel a little cozier. 

I’ve always believed fragrance is an important part of how a home feels. It may be a layer you don’t see, but you absolutely notice it. 

If you’re ready to bring a little more warmth into your home as the seasons change, here’s how I think about choosing a fragrance for fall. 

Why Your Home's Scent Should Change With the Seasons

I love changing the fragrance in my home with the seasons, just as I change what I cook, wear, and the little refreshes around each room. 

As the seasons shift, so does the way I want my home to feel. Summer calls for something fresh and light, but once the air turns cooler, I find myself wanting a scent that feels warmer, making a room feel settled rather than breezy. 

It's a small change, but it's one of the easiest ways to mark the start of a new season at home before you've done any decorating.

This is the idea behind choosing fall scents with some intention. It's easy to just reach for whatever fragrance is already open, but choosing something seasonal shifts how a space feels the moment you walk in. 

What Makes a Scent Feel "Fall"

A scent that reads as summer and one that reads as fall usually comes down to weight.

I think of it in terms of what a scent reminds you of. 

For fall, I tend to gravitate toward amber, vanilla, sandalwood, and other notes that give a fragrance warmth and depth. But the right seasonal scent is really the one that makes your home feel the way you want it to feel. 

It's less about a specific note and more about the feeling those notes create together. It makes the room feel cozy as the weather turns.

Vaniglia brings warmth more softly. It’s vanilla layered with jasmine for something that feels comforting without being heavy. 

Como

Inspired by the natural beauty of Lake Como, Como is a nice transition if you're easing into the autumn season.

Como brings a touch of elegance to any space. I like using a Como reed diffuser in my living room and love layering it with a spritz of Vaniglia.

One of the things I love about home fragrance is that every room does not need to smell exactly the same. I often use a warmer fragrance like Caldo in the living room and something a little fresher and woodier, like Como, near the entry. The scents complement one another while giving each space its own feeling.

With any reed diffuser, how often you flip the reeds will help control how noticeable the fragrance is. Flipping them more often will give you a stronger burst of scent, while flipping them less often will keep the fragrance a little more subtle. Just keep in mind that frequent flipping will also cause the fragrance to evaporate more quickly. 

Placement matters, too. I recommend keeping your diffuser in an open area where the fragrance can circulate naturally rather than tucked into a corner or enclosed shelf. Avoid placing it directly beside a heat source or air vent. 

These small adjustments make it easy to create the right level of fragrance in each room and layer several fall scents throughout your home.
